In Chris Fitch's chapter appears a very unusual piece, Spring, a mechanical fiddlehead fern, unfurling as it grows upward. To design this intricate and beautiful piece, Fitch worked through his design in various kinds of media, experimenting with the shape of the parts, different kinds of joints, and ways the sections would fit together. Here are pictures of the finished Spring, showing first, the beautifully fitted sections working together as it completely extends, then, three views of the piece as it alternately contracts and extends, powered by a motor and a series of levers and linkages, and below these, photos of one of Fitch's experimental moquettes, here built from pieces of jointed wood. In planning any kind of puppet or automaton movement, building working models, or moquettes, can save a great deal of time, and open new possibilities to the sculptor.
